Removal of Heavy Metals in Wastewater: Process Optimization with HYFLOC DTC681 and HIMOLOC TG998

19/02/2025

The removal of heavy metals in wastewater is a fundamental challenge for the industry, especially in sectors such as anodizing, mining and metal manufacturing. The presence of zinc, iron, nickel and copper in discharges can compromise regulatory compliance and generate negative environmental impacts.

At Derypol, we apply advanced solutions to address this problem efficiently, combining our experience in applied chemistry with innovative technologies. Thanks to laboratory tests carried out, seeking an improvement in the process of one of our clients, we have optimized a treatment based on HYFLOC DTC681 and HIMOLOC TG998, which guarantees the effective reduction of metals and a high-quality clarification.

The Challenge: Reduce Heavy Metals in Wastewater

Conventional industrial wastewater treatments are usually based on pH adjustments or the physical decantation of particles, but these methods are insufficient when it comes to the removal of heavy metals in wastewater.
Our laboratory discovered that our client’s current pH adjustment with sodium hydroxide was not sufficient to reduce the concentration of metals to acceptable levels in an effluent from the anodizing sector. The optimization of the process had to focus on:

  • Capture and precipitate heavy metals for effective elimination.
  • Optimize the sedimentation of the solids generated.
  • Obtain a cleaner clarification with less turbidity.

After evaluating several treatment combinations, the optimal solution was the joint use of HYFLOC DTC681 as a metal sequestering agent and HIMOLOC TG998 as a dispersion flocculant.

Proposed Solution: HYFLOC DTC681 and HIMOLOC TG998

HYFLOC DTC681 is a dithiocarbamate-based polymer, designed to selectively remove heavy metals. Its chemical action allows the capture and precipitation of contaminants such as mercury, copper, lead, nickel and zinc, making it a highly effective solution.

Key benefits of HYFLOC DTC681:

  • Eliminates heavy metals selectively, even in high concentrations.
  • Compatible with different industrial sectors, including mining and surface treatment.
  • Allows compliance with environmental regulations without generating secondary waste.

To complement the removal of metals, HIMOLOC TG998, a high-efficiency aqueous dispersion flocculant, was used. Its 3D structure facilitates the formation of resistant flocs, improving the clarification of the treated water.
Key benefits of HIMOLOC TG998:

  • Accelerates sedimentation and improves solid-liquid separation.
  • Significantly reduces the turbidity of the final effluent.
  • Technology free of solvents and VOCs, respectful of the environment.

The tests carried out withHYFLOC DTC681 and HIMOLOC TG998demonstrated:

  • Significant reduction of heavy metals, with final levels of zinc and iron below 1 ppm.
  • Cleaner and better quality clarified, with less polluting load.
  • Optimization of sedimentation time, ensuring the stability of the process.

Furthermore, it was observed that this treatment can be adapted to different industries that need to remove heavy metals without compromising operational efficiency.

Environmental Impact and Regulatory Compliance

Beyond the efficiency in the removal of heavy metals, the combination of HYFLOC DTC681 and HIMOLOC TG998 contributes to the sustainability of industrial processes. By reducing the amount of contaminants in wastewater, this treatment allows:

  • Minimize the environmental impact of industrial discharges.
  • Comply with strict water quality regulations.
  • Optimize operating costs by reducing the need for additional treatments.
