Slaughterhouse wastewater treatment with HIMOLOC technology

02/04/2025

Slaughterhouse wastewater treatment poses specific challenges due to the high organic load, the presence of fats, and the variability of the effluents. In this context, finding an effective, stable, and compatible solution with existing systems is key to ensuring environmental compliance and optimizing operating costs. In a recent case, the Derypol Application Laboratory team was called upon to address a specific problem: an industrial wastewater treatment plant equipped with a dissolved air flotation (DAF) system, which treated slaughterhouse wastewater using a conventional coagulation and flocculation program. The process included ferric chloride, pH adjustment with caustic soda, and an emulsion flocculant. However, the emulsion presented stability and phase separation issues, hindering treatment performance.

Flocculant replacement and results in slaughterhouse wastewater treatment

After conducting a battery of laboratory tests on the real sample, a technical solution was proposed, combining 700 ppm FeCl₃, pH adjustment to 7 with NaOH, and 20 ppm HIMOLOC GO8230, an anionic flocculant in aqueous dispersion. This solution maintained the desired performance with immediate flocculation and without the drawbacks associated with the previous product. The results demonstrated a 95% reduction in turbidity and a 35% reduction in COD, along with greater process stability, without phase separation. Furthermore, a significant improvement in product homogeneity, ease of handling, and a better cost-treatment ratio were observed, thus validating the effectiveness of this more sustainable and technically robust solution. What is HIMOLOC technology?

HIMOLOC is Derypol’s proprietary aqueous dispersion flocculant technology. These polymers are designed to improve the efficiency of solid-liquid separation in water treatment processes, offering operational and environmental advantages over traditional emulsions or powders. Their main features include:

  • They do not contain mineral oils, solvents, or surfactants, which reduces the pollution load and promotes the circular economy.
  • Instant preparation, without the need for expensive equipment or long dissolution times.
  • High product stability, without phase separation or the need for constant stirring.
  • Equivalent to or superior performance compared to other technologies, with improved performance against variations in water quality.

HIMOLOC GO8230, in particular, is an anionic flocculant formulated to offer high molecular weight, excellent clarification capacity, and compatibility with DAF processes in waters with oily content and variable pH. Learn more about HIMOLOC technology here.

Conclusion

The case study addressed at this treatment plant demonstrates how HIMOLOC technology can solve real-world operational problems in slaughterhouse wastewater treatment, improving system performance and reducing environmental impact. The experience of Derypol’s application laboratory allows each solution to be tailored to the client’s specific conditions, with prior testing ensuring technical viability.
