Wastewater treatment in the food industry is a constant challenge due to the variability in the composition of effluents, which may contain high concentrations of suspended solids, fats, oils and organic matter. To ensure a safe and efficient discharge, it is necessary to find the right combination of chemicals that optimize clarification and solid-liquid separation.
At Derypol, our application laboratory works with clients from different industrial sectors to develop specific treatments for each case. On this occasion, we carried out a study in a facility with dissolved air flotation (DAF), with the aim of improving the quality of the clarified water that is discharged and optimizing the sludge dewatering process.
The challenge: Wastewater treatment in the food industry
The wastewater analysed in this case had a number of characteristics that made its treatment difficult:
- High turbidity, making it difficult to clarify the water.
- High levels of suspended solids, which had to be removed before discharge.
- Compatibility with sludge dewatering, since the same flocculant must be able to be used in both stages
To address these challenges, various combinations of coagulants and flocculants were tested, evaluating their performance in clarification and solids separation.
Proposed solution
After several trials, it was identified that the best combination in this case was the use of HYBRIX FIX9535 as the main flocculant, together with HYFLOC AC80 as the coagulant. The hybrid technology of HYBRIX FIX9535 was key to improving the clarification and efficiency of the DAF system.
HYBRIX FIX9535: Emulsion Flocculant with Hybrid Technology
HYBRIX FIX9535 belongs to the generation of Hybrix flocculants, which combine the best of HIMOLOC emulsion and aqueous dispersion flocculants, offering high performance in solid-liquid separation.
What do we get with HYBRIX FIX9535?
- Compact and resistant flocs, which improve flotation in the DAF system.
- Greater efficiency in sludge dewatering, making it easier to handle and optimising the process.
- Fast and easy dissolution, reducing preparation times and improving dosing.
- Lower solvent content, complying with environmental regulations and reducing environmental impact.
- Better storage stability, avoiding phase separation problems and making handling easier.
HYFLOC AC80: Ideal complement as a coagulant
In this optimisation, HYFLOC AC80 was used as a coagulant to improve clarification and favour the removal of suspended solids.
Benefits observed with HYFLOC AC80:
- Efficient clarification, achieving a significant reduction in turbidity.
- Compatibility with pH adjustment, allowing to work in an optimal range of 7-8.
- Optimization of flotation and sedimentation, improving the separation of contaminants.
- Effective alternative to traditional inorganic coagulants, reducing the generation of sludge.

The laboratory tests confirmed that this combination achieved:
- Optimal clarification, with a significant reduction in the turbidity of the treated water.
- More compact and resistant flocs, optimizing flotation in the DAF system.
- Compatibility with sludge dewatering, ensuring a smooth process. stable and efficient.
- Greater dosing efficiency, reducing chemical consumption without compromising performance.
